Hello! I’m Carolyn. My passion is connecting people to amazing stories. I do this through editing, through writing, and by coaching people to achieve their own creative dreams.
My creative professional life
I’m an IPEd-accredited editor, a writer, a coach, and business chick. I’ve worked in the publishing industry for over 15 years, and I’ve run my own freelance business for over a decade. I’ve also served on the Editors Victoria Executive Committee.
In that time, I’ve edited over 200 books, worked with over 300 authors and with every major publishing company. I’ve edited all sorts of titles, from Supreme Court resources through to kid’s books about soccer-playing dinosaurs as well as complex multi-platformed education texts.
I write about film, books and popular culture. My writing has appeared in Screen Education, Metro Magazine, Australian Style and Overland.
Sometimes, I even ghostwrite books. Can’t tell you exactly who or what, but (shh!) I have ghostwritten a sports motivation book, a life coaching book and a novel about a princess (who may have been the star in a classic animated movie.)
As a coach, I’ve worked with authors, editors, universities and small business owners who want to tap into their own forms of creativity. I have coached writers who are busting out the first, second and subsequent drafts of their book. I coach creative professionals as they create the business – and the way of life – that they are craving.
I have also taught in the editing, publishing and writing programs at RMIT, Victoria University and Deakin University. In 2015, I am also involved in IPEd’s national mentoring scheme for editors.
Bits from other parts of my creative life
Can you ever truly separate what you do from who you are?
Outside of my creative professional life, I’m a Mama to two little boys. I love books, blogs, op shops, gardening, mucking around in the kitchen and dancing crazily with my kids. Occasionally I find the the time to have a quiet read…
Here are five random things you might like to know about me…
- Sometimes, when I read with the Grade 2 girls at my son’s school, I end up wanting to commit Tinkercide.
- My entire Melbourne suburb was once owned by the real-life inspiration for Miss Havisham.
- The motorcycle parked at our house is…mine.
- Being a Mother of Boys, I get an unexpected delight when the girls at their school go crazy for my shoes.
- Finally, according to my Mr 7, when I wear my favourite perfume, I smell like ‘Fart and pollen’ with ‘A bit of honey’. So now you know.
